When does puberty begin?

puberty for girls

• Don’t worry if your body changes sooner or later than your friends because there is no set age for puberty. For girls, puberty often occurs between the ages of 9 and 15. Boys typically hit puberty between 11 and 16 years old.

• Remember that changes happen over time. Everybody’s body is different so some will develop very quickly and some will develop slowly. Your first signs of puberty may be different from your friends.

Puberty in girls – What are the stages and changes in the body?

• One of the major physiological changes of puberty is the growth and development of sexual organs – having sex and being used to make children.

• As you reach puberty, your vagina begins to produce a clear or milky fluid called discharge. This may seem strange at first but it is a positive sign because it helps keep your vagina healthy.

Stage 1:

• Step 1 describes the appearance of a child before the physical signs of puberty appear. At the end of Phase 1, the brain begins to send signals to the body to prepare for changes.

• The hypothalamus begins to release gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GNRH). GNRH travels to the pituitary gland, a small area of the brain that makes up hormones that regulate other glands in the body.

• The pituitary gland also produces two other hormones: luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).

• These early signs usually begin after the girl’s 8th birthday and the boy’s 9th or 10th birthday. There are no noticeable physical changes for boys or girls at this stage.

Stage 2:

• Phase 2 initiates physical development. Hormones start sending signals throughout the body.

• Puberty usually starts between the ages of 9 and 11 years. The first signs of breasts called “buds” begin to form under the nipple. They may be itchy or tender, which is common.

• It is common for breasts to grow at different sizes and at different rates. So, it is common if one bud looks bigger than another. The darker area around the nipple (aurola) also expands.

• Additionally, the uterus begins to grow larger, and small amounts of open hair on the vaginal lips begin to grow.

• On average, African-American girls begin puberty about a year before Caucasian girls, and advance when it comes to breast development and having their first periods. Also, girls with high body mass index may experience early adulthood.

Stage 3:

Physical changes are becoming more apparent.

Physical changes in girls usually begin after 12 years. These changes include:

• Breast “buds” continue to grow and expand.

• The pubic hair is thick and curly.

• Hair begins to form under the armpits.

• The first signs of acne appear on the face and back.

• Height begins with the highest growth rate (3.2 inches per year).

• The hips and thighs increase fat.

Stage 4:

Adolescence is in full swing. Boys and girls are noticing much change.

• In girls, stage 4 usually begins at age 13. Changes:

• The boobs take full shape, crossing the bud stage.

• Most girls get their first period, most often between the ages of 12 and 14, but it can happen earlier.

• Growth height increases by 2 to 3 inches per year.

• Pubic hair is thicker.

Stage 5:

This last step represents your child’s physical maturity.

In girls, stage 5 usually occurs at the age of 15 years. Changes include:

• Boobs can reach roughly adult size and shape, although boobs can vary up to 18 years of age.

• Six months to two years and then months become regular.

• Girls can reach adult height one to two years after their first period.

• Pubic hair fills the inner thighs.

• Reproductive organs and genitals are fully developed.

• Hips, thighs, and buttocks fill out in shape.

• Pubic hair covered and spread to inner thighs.

• Hair begins to shave off facial hair and some guys start shaving.

• Growth slows growth, but the muscles may still be growing.

• 18 boys reach full growth by the age of 18 years.

Other changes for girls

• Hair grows under your arms and between your legs.

• Leg hair may get thicker and darker and you may grow hair on your upper lip.

• Extend your hips to get started. It prepares your body for the child.

• Most girls get spots to start with.

• Body sweat and most girls start using deodorant.

• The growth grows rapidly from time to time.

Puberty during new feelings and emotions

Puberty and many people begin to explore and touch their bodies more. This is called masturbation. It may seem strange when you start doing it, but masturbation is a very natural way to feel good and feel nothing.

Some people are attracted to the same sex, the opposite sex, or both in adulthood. Others may not attract anyone. This is certainly common, and you should not worry about it. Some people find their sexuality at a very young age, puberty or puberty – which is even better.
